Co-edited by Alistair G.S. Philip, MD, FAAP, and William W. Hay Jr., MD, FAAP, NeoReviews each month delivers 3 to 4 clinical reviews, case discussions, basic science insights and "on the horizon" pieces. Written and edited by experts, these concise reviews are available to NeoReviews subscribers at http://neoreviews.aappublications.org.
Since January 2009, all clinical articles have been mapped to the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) content specifications in neonatology.
As an educational journal, NeoReviews gives subscribers the opportunity to earn up to 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ per year. An additional 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ are available with a subscription to NeoReviewsPlus, which offers 10 new peer-reviewed self-assessment questions each month. In addition, the NeoReviewsPlus self-assessment satisfies Part 2 of the ABP PMCP-S®.
Since its inception, NeoReviews has been developed in part through an educational grant from Abbott Nutrition, Inc.
NeoReviews publishes comprehensive, peer-reviewed analytical and critical review articles on important subjects in neonatology and perinatology. An invitation to prepare a review usually originates with the editors. However, unsolicited manuscripts are welcomed and are published when they meet the scientific and literary standards set by the NeoReviews Editorial Board.
Authors are encouraged to include clinical images, videos and audio files that may enhance readers' understanding of the article, commentary or case presentation. The images or videos may be used for the journal's home page. Electronic files, slides, or, for Historical Perspectives, glossy prints may be submitted.
We remind authors of solicited reviews of the need to adhere to deadlines. Because NeoReviews is a “reviews-only” journal, adhering to deadlines is particularly important to meet the publication date each month.
Many authors are asked to write review articles for more than one journal. We understand that it may be difficult to avoid using similar phrases, but if there is substantial repetition of a previous article, this “self-plagiarism” should be indicated by reference or acknowledgment of the earlier article. Verbatim repetition should be placed in quotation marks, followed by a reference to the previously published article. The American Academy of Pediatrics subscribes to an online plagiarism detection system.
Manuscripts should be accompanied by a submission letter signed by all authors, stating:
In order to address the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies, all NeoReviews authors should consider addressing professionalism, communications skills, practice improvement, and systems-based practice in their submissions whenever possible.
Style
Grammar, punctuation, and scientific writing styles should follow those in the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 10th Edition (2007).
Articles should be succinct and written professionally and objectively. Abbreviations should be avoided insofar as possible. Any that are unavoidable should be listed alphabetically, with their definitions, on a separate manuscript page headed, "Abbreviations."
Objectives
A list of four or five learning objectives should accompany the article.
References
References are for the purpose of further reading and should be designated as "Suggested Reading." An alternative is to cite references within the text, but a limit of 50 references is suggested. (A short list of suggested readings is preferred to an exhaustive reference list.) Abbreviations for journals should follow those in Index Medicus.
Tables, Illustrations, Figures
Tables and illustrations should be used to highlight articles and interest readers. Tables must be comprehensible without reference to the text, and must be submitted as JPEG, TIFF, GIF, or PowerPoint files. Each table should be on a separate file, be numbered consecutively, and have a brief title.
Figures and illustrations should be numbered according to the order in which they are mentioned in the text.
Electronic submissions should be JPEG, TIFF, GIF, or PowerPoint files. The dpi for halftones (photos, slides, etc.) must be at least 300 and the dpi for lineshots (line drawings) must be at least 1200.
The journal does not accept Word files for illustrations.
Illustrations should not be embedded within a manuscript. Please go to the Cadmus website for digital art to be sure that your files meet the standards: http://art.cadmus.com/da/index.jsp.
Hard copies of illustrations should be identified with the number and the author's name, and "top" should be indicated. Artwork (prints) should not be stapled, clipped together, mounted, or trimmed. Details to be emphasized or "crop" marks should be indicated on a tissue overlay, not on the illustration itself.
Photographs of patients should be submitted only when written parental permission has been obtained. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain this permission and keep a copy on file.
Legends for figures should be included on a separate page.
Color illustrations are reproduced at no extra charge to the author, and may be submitted as either: files in JPEG, TIFF, GIF format; slides; or prints. One copy of the original file, color slide or print is requested for the best reproduction.
Videos
Videos should be submitted in QuickTime 6.0 or higher format, and may be prepared on either a PC or Macintosh computer. All videos should be submitted at the desired reproduction size and length. To avoid excessive delays in downloading the files, videos should be no more than 6MB in size, and run between 30 and 60 seconds in length. Authors are encouraged to use QuickTime's "compress" option when preparing files to help control file size. In addition, cropping frames and image sizes can significantly reduce file sizes. Files submitted can be looped to play more than once, provided file size does not become excessive.
Authors will be notified if problems exist with videos as submitted, and will be asked to modify them. No editing will be done to the videos at the editorial office; all changes are the responsibility of the author.
Videos may be submitted via ZIP Disk or CDRW. Video files should be named clearly to correspond with the figure they represent (ie, figure1.mov, etc.). Be sure all video files have filenames that are no more than eight characters long, and include the suffix ".mov." A "read me" file containing the number, names and types of files submitted should also be included. In addition, a caption for each video should be provided (preferably in a similarly named Word file submitted with the videos), stating clearly the content of the video presentation and its relevance to the materials submitted.
Disclosure
Authors with a financial association with a profit-making company are not prohibited from publishing in NeoReviews. However, AAP author disclosure policy does require that all authors disclose to learners any significant financial interest or other relationship with the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and/or providers of commercial services discussed in an educational presentation and with any commercial supporter(s) of the activity. Each author also is required to disclose whether his or her article contains any discussion of off-label (unapproved or investigational use of products, including medications and/or medical devices. Each author will be asked to complete a full disclosure form upon article acceptance.
Reprint Permission
Any material that has been published previously (table, illustration, video) must include a reprint permission form from the publisher granting NeoReviews permission to use the material. The required reprint permission acknowledgment should be included in figure captions and at the ends of tables. Many publishers now provide such permission electronically via their Web sites.
Submission Guidelines
When submitting a manuscript, please:
Honoraria
Honoraria for recruited articles are released after the final copy of the manuscript has been accepted. Authors' Social Security numbers or tax identification numbers are required for payment to be processed.
